Presidents Cup 2026: Team USA Aims for 11th Straight Win at Medinah

How the Tournament Format Shapes Strategy

Team USA is set to host the International Team at the 16th Presidents Cup, beginning Thursday at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. The biennial contest kicks off with foursomes and four-ball matches, as the Americans look to extend their dominance in the rivalry. Live coverage will be available on Sky Sports Golf from the opening rounds.

The Presidents Cup, held every two years, pits 12 American golfers against an international squad excluding Europeans. Team USA has won the last 10 meetings, dating back to 1998, and enters as heavy favorites. Medinah, which previously hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup, provides a familiar yet challenging backdrop for the competition. Captains will announce pairings daily based on form and strategy, with alternate-shot and best-ball formats testing teamwork and nerve.

What Happens If the Cup Ends in a Tie?

Unlike standard stroke-play events, the Presidents Cup relies on match play, where each hole is a separate contest. This encourages aggressive tactics, as players can concede holes to conserve energy for tougher stretches. Foursomes, where partners hit alternate shots, demand precision and communication, while four-ball allows both to play their own ball, lowering the pressure on individual mistakes. Captains often save their strongest players for the final singles matches, which can swing the overall outcome dramatically.

If the competition finishes with equal points, the Presidents Cup is shared, and the current holder retains the trophy. Since Team USA won in 2023, they would keep the Cup in the event of a 15-15 draw. This rule has only come into play once, in 2003, when darkness halted the final match. A tie would still be seen as a moral victory for the International Team, given the Americans’ recent supremacy.

How many points are needed to win the Presidents Cup? A team must earn at least 15.5 points out of the 30 available to win outright. Matches are worth one point each, with halves awarded for tied games.
