World Athletics Schedules Ultimate Championship Right After 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Budapest Blueprint Proves Massive Success for Track and Field
World Athletics officially announced that the second edition of the Ultimate Championship will take place immediately following the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, securing a permanent spot for the high-stakes global track and field event on the international sporting calendar.
The announcement follows the massive success of the inaugural tournament held in Budapest, which drew over 61,000 spectators across three completely sold-out sessions. The event also generated an impressive 1.8 billion social media impressions worldwide, proving the strong global appetite for a fast-paced, high-production athletics showcase.
The premiere event in Budapest set a high benchmark for future competitions by condensing the sport's biggest stars into a high-energy, broadcast-friendly format. Organizers focused on delivering thrilling matchups without the traditional multi-day qualifying rounds, creating an intense atmosphere that resonated strongly with younger digital audiences.
Will American Audiences Embrace the Post-Olympic Showcase?
Building on this momentum, the governing body aims to capitalize on the post-Olympic spotlight in Southern California. Staging the championship directly after the Games allows athletes to maintain peak fitness and keeps public enthusiasm for track and field running at an all-time high.
Hosting the tournament on United States soil immediately after an Olympics presents a unique opportunity to capture mainstream American sports fans. By keeping the world's elite competitors together for one final showdown before the off-season, World Athletics hopes to cement the event as a permanent crown jewel of the sport.
